Module 6
The world
around us is emerging and changing every day. The students in our schools are
challenged with diverse environments and new earning criteria. The students are
not the only ones with these challenges, the instructors of the students have
to adapt and find ways to teach these students. ”The new literacies require a
high level of sophistication from our students,” (Doering & Robyler 2013)
this create reasons for integrating more technologies into the classroom.
Advantages
Ebooks, Wiki page, Electronic
Outlining, Digital Storytelling
With the
language Arts field there are some advantages of integrating new technologies. With
writing activities you have to come up with good concepts. Concept mapping software
is popular as a pre-writing planning tool. (Doering & Roblyer 2013) Another
advantage of technology in the classroom is having the use of auto correction in
a writing course. AutoCorrect is a built in feature that automatically detects
and corrects misspelled words. (Doering & Robyler 2013) “Technology offers a natural setting in which
students in which students can be positioned as the experts.” (Doering &
Robyler 2013) The instructor can also use a Wike page to keep student involed
with each other work. A wiki is a collection of web pages
located in an online community that encourage collaboration.(Doering &
Robyler 2013) Here is a video discussing the advantage of technology in the
classroom.

Disadvantages
Teacher understand
that technology intergrated into the classroom is a great thing. It create
endless amounts of oppurtunities to teach students great things. What if your
technology don’t work? This is were one of the problems falls into place. If a
teacher base her whole day around the use of a specific technology and it does
not work, the teacher day goes downs the drain. Some schools have intergrated Bring Your Own Device. BYOD is a great
idea but you run into a problem when you have less foutunate kids with the
ability of BYOD. Here is an article discussing some of the cons of technology
intergration in the classroom.
Darrell I think we are in agreement about some of the disadvantages. Money does come into play a lot with technology, especially for the BYOB schools. Some kids are less fortunate than other and may not be able to afford their own device. Our book discusses the lack of funding for some kids and also for schools as well (Roblyer and Doering, 2013, p. 14).
ReplyDeleteLike you said, teachers are constantly having to adapt to the ever changing world in order to teach students. We must keep up with the world around us and learn how to use new technology in order to implement it into our lessons. A huge challenge is that teachers must know which tools to use and how to use them in the best way possible (pg 324). And if we want to teach our students how to use the technology, we must become "masters" of these technologies (pg 324). This is so much expected of teachers when it comes to technology integration and use!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your entire disadvantages section. Technology is such a finicky thing, and to expect it to work all the time whenever you need it or plan a lesson around it may not be the best decision.
ReplyDeleteI love the concept mapping software idea, especially coming from someone who struggles in writing. I always know what to say, just may not know how to properly organize the information. That software allows for organization of thoughts and would result in better writing and lead to better over all thinking processes. And who could live without autocorrect?!
Your advantages make total sense and a student’s sophistication in technology can never be underestimated. I also was impressed that you made a point to emphasize the advantage of auto correct in the classroom. In an era where technology is so highly advanced people forget the basics and how useful they are to students. I compare this to an online dictionary. The wiki without a doubt has proven to be a must have for classroom interaction. We live in an online community. The wiki is a tool, I will always utilize in my classroom to encourage collaboration and display student’s work or progress (Robyler and Doering, 2013, p 226).
ReplyDeleteThe BYOD concept is also controversial when it comes to low income schools. You made a very valid point this can be a substantial disadvantage.
