Module Three

The way the world works now, you have to be able to search the web and be web literate. As a teacher you have to stay on your toes in order to keep the kids interested. Having access to the web can allow you to revert to video about the subject matter at hand. So you have to start off by understand how and what to look for regarding websites.
What do URLs tell you/students about web sites?
“URLs are uniform resources locations and can better known as internet addresses” (Roblyer Doering 218). When searching for a site or web page you have to know where to put it.   “The line where the URLs is entered is called the address line.” (Roblyer Doering 218) The domain designator explains a lot for the student. Some of the designators are; .com, .edu, .net, .org. For example if a student see and website such as https://www.miles.edu/admissions, the .edu expresses to them that it’s a website of higher education.
How can learning to use search engines help you/students find better information?
Understanding how to use search engines can cut down on the time and miscellaneous use of the search site your using. According to the book “the search engine site provides a lists of topics you can click on.”(Roblyer Doering 219) You can search for a passage that you’re looking for in a book, and stumble on an hit that provide information from scholarly articles which can provide a different outlook on the subject matter. Hits are “pages listed as a result of the search” (Roblyer Doering 219)
What is a Podcast?
A podcast is digitized audio files often saved in mp3 file format. (Roblyer Doering 224) The difference between a podcast and any other audio file you can just simply upload to a computer, is that a podcast can be syndicated or subscribed to. This where you as a teacher can create a page just for your student to perform  their poetry. Podcast typically resembles a radio broadcast or interview. (Roblyer Doering 224) Student can host there podcast with others reverting back to lesson that was covered prior in class.
Google
Google is a search engine site. A search engine special searching program designed to help locate things. (Robuler Doering 219) Google is the first site I go to for everything I need to look for. Images, videos, and other informal outlets are easy to find. I would use it to find different diagrams for how to structure a sentence and even to help me find information for powerpoints. “The pages listed as a result of the search are sometimes called hits.”(Roblyer Doering 219)

ZOHO

Zoho is a site that allows you take your desk with you. As a teacher it’s important to have a backup plan for that misplaced jump drive. As a teacher or student you able to create documents and saved them with having to carry anything around with you. It’s saved as a bookmark on my timeline .Bookmarks are “created list or an organizational online tool.”(Roblyer Doering 218) It would be good to hash tag this site on twitter. “A prefix consisting of a # sign and a topic name” (Roblyer Doering 221)

  1. Hey, I really liked your utilization of ZOHO, I found it very instructional and useful as well. The concept of storing documents on the internet is a truly metaphysical concept. It allows teachers and students to create documents and store them using “cloud computing… using the software stored outside ones’ own computer on servers that are accessed through the Internet” (220).

  2. I agree that Zoho is a valuable resource. Our textbook points out that presentation software "made the transition from business to education and home use" (p.128). This made me realize that showing students effective presentations does more than teach them a subject; it helps them recognize the elements of effective presentations, a skill which many of them can take into their workplaces after high school!

  3. There really is an art to web searching. There are certain words that are part of what you are searching that if you enter them will pull in hundreds of unrelated search results. Also you have to be careful if the item you are searching has an alternate meaning that could pull up not so appropriate results. Google is still my favorite search engine as well. I really don't know why but I can't stand using Bing if I can use Google.

  4. I think the podcast is a great way to get interact with students. Not only the teachers can use this, but students can make their own as well. This will make students understand the information that they learn instead of simply memorizing it. I like the e-portfolios so the students can "showcase their work and to organize, revise, and store digital assets they have created inside and outside the classroom" (Robyler & Doering, 2013, p.224). I also like the zoho resource you brought up. I think it is a great way even for students to use just in case they lose their jump drive. There is no excuses with losing homework material for class because it is all online. Great idea!

  5. As the book states, "technological problems can doom the best planned course." I also love Zoho because you won't have to worry about a malfunctioning thumbdrive or file. You just need an internet connection! I'm one of those people who has the worst luck when it comes to technology. So being able to store documents on a website would be so helpful and help me to not worry about the what if's!
